A Stranger in Mayfair

December 31, 2010

A Stranger in Mayfair is the latest Victorian mystery by Charles Finch, featuring private investigator Charles Lenox, about to take his seat in the House of Commons, and his new wife and former next-door neighbor Lady Jane. After a honeymoon in Paris, they’re still getting settled into their newly joined houses and life, making decisions such as what to do with two butlers. Lady Jane would prefer that Charles stop putting himself in danger by investigating murders, while she’s busy helping friends with a brand new baby. A fellow member of Parliament, Ludovic Starling, asks Lenox and his young associate, Lord Dallington, to look into the death of his footman, then seems to change his mind. The main characters are realistic. They grow and change over time beginning with their first appearances in A Beautiful Blue Death, and the settings are unusual and interesting.
