Half Broke Horses

October 31, 2010

This is a biographical novel about the author’s remarkable grandmother, Lily Casey Smith. Lily was a maid, a rancher, a bootlegger, a teacher, a pioneer, and a survivor. Set partly in Chicago, but mostly in the high desert of the American Southwest. Lily gentled horses, rode hundreds of miles to her first job as a teenager, survived flash floods, and took flying lessons. Plucky, resourceful, Lily never gave up. And once you start reading this book, you won’t want to stop. Readalikes include three books by Nancy Turner, starting with These is My Words, and The Hearts of Horses, by Molly Gloss.
