A Countess Below Stairs

September 18, 2010

Anna was raised in Russia, the beloved daughter of Russian aristocrats. The Bolshevik Uprising changed everything, and the family fled to England, taking refuge with Anna’s English governess. Their jewels are missing, and they are penniless. Anna takes a temporary job in Yorkshire as a housemaid, helping the staff get the estate ready for the wedding of the new Earl of Westerholme and the wealthy Miss Muriel Hardwick. Anna charms everyone, including the staid butler, Mr. Prune, and also befriends young Ollie Byrne. Ollie’s brother will be Rupert’s best man, and Ollie gets to be a bridesmaid. Then we meet Muriel Hardwick, quite a nasty character. By then, of course, Rupert has become fond of Anna. We know how the book will end, but there are many twists and turns in between, some very funny and others poignant.
