The Tale of Oat Cake Crag

September 17, 2010

For a refreshingly cozy British mystery, try one of Susan Wittig Albert’s Cottage Tales. They feature writer/illustrator/farmer Beatrix Potter and many assorted villagers, cats, badgers, dogs, ferrets, an owl and a dragon. The Tale of Oat Cake Crag is the 7th book in the series; The Tale of Hill Top Farm is the first. In this episode, a noisy hydroplane is annoying the people and animals of Near and Far Sawrey, and the vicar’s fiance has been getting threatening notes. Beatrix, aided by solicitor Will Heelis, and unknowingly aided by the animals, looks into the blackmail problem, while an owl and a dragon take steps regarding the threatening hydroplane. In other news, the badgers throw a surprise birthday party for Bosworth Badger, and  a secret Beatrix has been keeping from her parents and brother is revealed. Check out the Cottage Tales website.
