Tall Ships at Navy Pier

September 4, 2010

Last week my husband and I went to Navy Pier in Chicago to see the Tall Ships. There were 20 sailing ships, mostly replicas of historic ships. We didn’t go for a sail, but we did get to board and tour about half of the ships. Several countries and  three states sent ships. Denis Sullivan represents Wisconsin, and was built by 900 volunteers in 2000. Europa, from the Netherlands, 195 foot long, was beautiful; it was fun to listen to the crew.  We didn’t tour the large HMS Bounty, built for the movies, as the lines were rather long. It was fascinating to see the ships against alongside modern cruise ships and the Hancock Tower.

Here we’re looking up the mast to the rigging. They’re not called Tall Ships for nothing.
