Scenic Overlook, Greene Valley Forest Preserve

This weekend we drove up the side of a former landfill to the scenic overlook at Greene Valley Forest Preserve. At 190 feet, I believe it’s the second highest point in Dupage County, after the Oakbrook Terrace Tower. It’s a nice place to look for landmarks, watch little kids chase butterflies (butterflies fly quite fast), see hawks, model airplanes, and more. This view is of Whalon Lake, a new forest preserve in Naperville, off Royce Road. It’s also repurposed land; a former farm and gravel quarry turned into a lake and preserve. You can click on the photo for a closer view, and catch a glimpse of the 1 1/2 mile path around the lake. This forest preserve never seems crowded, and is lovely year round.
